Frankenstein 200

In every city and town in America there are scores of unique Halloween events during the month of October. As I was throwing out some of my never-ending junk mail I saw an upcoming event that looks really cool. This year El Camino Community College in Torrance California will be celebrating the bicentennial celebration of Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein in an event called Frankenstein 200. There will be music, panel discussions, an art exhibit, a screening of the 1931 classic film and even a ghost story writing contest! Sounds like a blast! Keep reading to get all the juicy details for this one of a kind event.

Frankenstein 200 at El Camino College

Can you believe it’s been 200 years since Mary Shelley first released the classic tale of Frankenstein? This year El Camino College is putting on an event known as Frankenstein 200. The main event will be on Saturday October 14th, 2017 from 6-9pm at the Marsee Auditorium. First of all there will be Frankenstein music inspired by Dublab DJ, Jenny Nono. There will also be a screening of the 1931 Frankenstein film starring the one and only Boris Karloff. Stick around for the panel discussion lead by Mary Shelley scholar Dr. Fuson Wang. Among the topics being discussed is the question of how a teenage novel has managed to capture the world’s imagination for 200 years. There will be literary scholars, historians, biologists, musicians, and filmmakers present.

If you think that sounds fun so far, well there’s more! Bring your own T-shirt or other item to the Frankenstein “It’s Alive!” Maker Stations to have an item screen printed for FREE. If you don’t bring something there will be plenty of shirts and totes for sale. Science stations will be set up by the El Camino Chemistry Department. It will be interesting to see what creepy Frankenstein things they will display. Other workshops include The Art of the Ghost Story Writing Workshop, two Monster Mash Cartoon Drawing Workshops (one for grades 3-5 and another for grades 6-8) and a Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein Life Drawing Workshop. Finally take a ride on the Frankenstein Van to view the Frankenstein 200 interactive ART installation room. For more information watch the Frankenstein 200 video promotion below.

I almost forgot to mention there is also a Ghost Story Writing Contest. You could win a limited edition Frankenstein 200 T-shirt and tote bag by Calimucho filled with treats including a $50 Amazon gift card and a copy of “Frankenstein: Annotated for Scientists, Engineers, and Creators of All Kinds”. You’ll have to submit your story by 5pm Wednesday September 27, 2017. The winners will be announced on Saturday October 14th.

If you can’t make it on October 14th there are several more dates throughout the year where you can view the Frankenstein 200 Art Installation Room. Purchase your tickets here to attend the official event flyer. This event sounds like a one-of-a-kind experience! See you there!
